How To Close/Disable USB Port from Computer
Post by: admin

USB port is one of the important think for our computer, we can connect the USB for communicate with other gadget such as printer, mouse, keyboard, or cellular phone or PDA. I think almost new digital gadget already available USB port. Beside use for communicate between computer and gadgets, USB also can use for charge low ampere gadget such PDA or Cellular Phone.

Before year 2000, for transfer file or copy files to bring to other computer, we need a diskette. At that time, diskette is very useful for transfer files, but the small size of diskspace and the vulnerability of the diskette surface, make diskette is not recommended for keep important data, especially if the data does not have a backup at other location. But we don't have other choice to use diskette. Until a read and write flash  memory disk began to be introduced at market.

Flash disk now is become very important for transfering files, this is because USB flashdisk retail price become more cheaper for more bigger space for save important data. It is so easy to transfer data to flashdisk, just plug the flashdisk to USB port of computer, for version of Windows 2000 above than computer will detect USB flashdisk as mass storage device without need install anything. The USB mass storage device driver will be automatically install by it self. But for Windows 98 version, the USB mass storage device driver should have to install first, because this driver is not included at Windows 98 installation source. After computer detected the flashdisk, than the new driver will show up at My Computer drive list, than just copy-paste the files that we want to transfer.

How Close / Disable USB Port for Flashdisk Connection

Be careful when transferring data from one computer to other computer, because lately so many virus is use the flashdisk as the way to infection other computer.  If we plug the clean flashdisk (non virus) at the computer which  already have the virus, usually virus will create an autorun.inf and the virus files to flashdisk. Once the infected flashdisk connect to other vulnerable computer, than the virus will be run by autorun. That's way it is always good to stop the autorun process at our Windows, by using special tools to do it, one of my favorite is Windows Power Toys – TweakUI.

We are now talking about computer with Microsoft Windows XP operating system. For some company have rule to close all USB connection for flashdisk port at every computer. This is not to close by the hardware, because for some reason, we still need USB for computer communicate with other gadgets such as printer, modem, etc.

To close USB only for disable flashdisk connection, you have a privileges as administrator. Plug a flashdisk to USB port.
Open: Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers
When we plug the USB Flashdisk, bellow “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” will show USB Mass Storage Device, right click and choose Disable, then the USB Mass Storage Device will be close mark with red x.

Yes, if your Windows XP user have the same administrators privileges then she or he still can unable USB Mass Storage Device, but if no administrators privileges, then they can not change it back to Unable. Be careful and make sure who should have the administrator privileges.
